The Third Reich
The Third Reich 1933-1939
Establishing a totalitarian state
The Third Reich was based on the twin pillars of Nazi ideology – the rejection of individual rights in favour of totalitarian state power and a belief in the superiority of a ‘pure Aryan’ (Germanic) race.
All political parties except for the Nazi Party were banned. The church, legal system, police, education, science, arts and the media were controlled and used to ensure that people supported the Nazis and their beliefs.
Racial purity and superiority of the ‘Aryan’ race permeated every aspect of society. All who were considered ‘racially impure’ were excluded from German society. Jews were the primary target.
