SUMMARY:Rescuing the Repertoire of the Yiddish Shoah Song
DESCRIPTION:RSVP to admin@holocaust.org.za \nThis presentation highlights the life and career of Vilna-born poet and anthologist Shmerke Kaczerginski. Known for his pre-war revolutionary folksongs\, Kaczerginski was a vital creative force in the Vilna ghetto and later joined an underground partisan unit. During the war\, he began collecting songs\, believing they were unique historical documentation and a memorial to Nazi genocide victims. His major contribution\, the 1948 anthology Lider fun di getos und lagern (Songs from the Ghettos and Camps)\, remains a key reference in Holocaust-era Jewish music folklore. The presentation will feature recordings from this collection and other Shoah song preservation efforts.
