SUMMARY:24-Hour Virtual Global Vigil to Unite Against Hate
DESCRIPTION:On April 29th\, join us for an unprecedented 24-hour global vigil online to conclude Genocide Awareness Month and unite the fight against hate worldwide. With hate on the rise and a global pandemic keeping us apart\, it’s essential that we come together virtually across lines of difference. The #TogetherWeRemember Coalition\, made up of leading genocide education and human rights organizations\, invites you to join us for twenty-four hours of inclusive name-readings\, insightful speakers\, and inspiring performances that honour the victims of and upstanders to identity-based violence and genocide throughout history. Join us as we remember humanity at its worst to demonstrate what humanity can be at its best. \nThis global vigil is the culminating event of the #TogetherWeRemember Campaign – thirty days of virtual events organized by museums\, schools\, and communities to bridge the gap between awareness and action in the fight against hate. On April 30th\, we intend to demonstrate the diversity and depth of work being done by incredible organizations around the world to make “never again” a reality – once and for all. \nThe SAHGF slot is at 2pm (SAST)

SUMMARY:Growing Up Jewish - Art & Storytelling by Jacqueline Kott-Wolle
DESCRIPTION:Register for this talk \n  \nJoin Kott-Wolle for a presentation and discussion of “Growing Up Jewish – Art & Storytelling\,” a series of 35 oil paintings and stories about Jewish identity in North America and how it transmits from one generation to the next. \n“They existed in living color for me – in their printed sundresses\, socks and sandals\, with numbers tattooed on their arms\,” she writes. “Some of them had haunted looks in their eyes and seemed burdened with a profound sadness that kept them at the edge of anger while others were brimming with gratitude and optimism as they rebuilt their lives in Canada. All of them viewed my generation as walking miracles on earth.” \n  \nBio: \nJacqueline Kott-Wolle (b.1969) lives in Highland Park\, IL where she paints full time.  In 2005\, after moving to Chicago from Toronto with her family\, Jacqueline fulfilled a long-time goal of developing her ability to paint by studying at The Art Center of Highland Park.  Using a fresh palette of color\, Kott-Wolle currently paints in oils and focuses on capturing precious moments with her family and friends. Her most recent project\, entitled “Growing Up Jewish – Art and Storytelling” is a series of 35 contemporary oil paintings and personal narratives exploring her North American brand of Jewish identity and how it evolved through five generations of her family. Her work has been exhibited in both group and solo exhibitions. Jacqueline’s works are in private collections throughout the United States\, Canada and Israel.

SUMMARY:Silvia Foti: The Nazi’s Granddaughter
DESCRIPTION:Register for this webinar \nSILVIA FOTI\, author of the memoir The Nazi’s Granddaughter: How I Discovered My Grandfather Was a War Criminal\, is an award-winning investigative journalist in Chicago and a high school literature teacher. She holds master’s degrees in journalism\, education\, and creative nonfiction. \nSilvia made a deathbed promise to her mother to write a book about her famous\, WWII hero grandfather\, Jonas Noreika twenty-one years ago. Silvia’s grandmother begged her not to write about her husband. “Just let history lie\,” she whispered. Silvia had no idea that in keeping her promise to her mother\, her discoveries would bring her to a personal crisis\, challenge her Catholic faith\, unearth Holocaust denial\, and expose an official cover-up by the Lithuanian government. \nHer goal in writing this story of her grandfather\, known as General Storm in Lithuania\, is to upend Lithuania’s narrative that Lithuanians had nothing to do with killing Jews\, that it was all done by German Nazis.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: I Am Here
DESCRIPTION:This screening forms part of the Encounters Film Festival. \nThis powerful film offers a portrait of 98-year-old Polish Holocaust survivor Ella Blumenthal\, whose vibrance and vitality has not been dimmed by either age or the weight of the terrible events she has endured. As Ella recounts her experience of the Holocaust\, the corresponding events are rendered in sensitively drawn animation. The film follows Ella\, who was a young adult at the time\, from her happy life as a Polish teenager to the horrors of the Warsaw Ghetto\, and on to Auschwitz\, where she narrowly escaped the gas chambers. At a time when Holocaust denialism has gained fringe legitimacy\, this is an important film and a counter to those who deny the horrors of history. In documenting Ella’s narrative of survival and transcendence\, the film provides a viscerally personal account of an historical event that is all too easily abstracted into ideology.

SUMMARY:The Rabbi of Buchenwald by Dr Rafael Medoff
DESCRIPTION:Register for this talk \nRabbi Herschel Schacter\, a U.S. army chaplain in World War II\, was part of the unit that liberated the Nazi concentration camp of Buchenwald\, and remained in the camp for two and a half months to aid the survivors. He was the first Orthodox rabbi to chair the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations. Through the prism of Herschel Schacter’s life\, The Rabbi of Buchenwald also sheds important new light on how American Jewry grappled with the political\, social and racial crises of the 1960s\, 1970s\, and beyond. \nBio \nDr. Rafael Medoff is founding director of The David S. Wyman Institute for Holocaust Studies\, based in Washington\, D.C.\, which focuses on America’s response to Nazism and the Holocaust. He is the author of more than 20 books about the Holocaust\, Zionism\, and American Jewish history\, and has contributed to the Encyclopedia Judaica and many other reference volumes. Dr. Medoff has taught Jewish history at Ohio State UnIversity\, Purchase College of the State University of New York\, and elsewhere\, and is a Fellow of the Finkler Institute of Holocaust Research at Bar-Ilan University. SUMMARY:Nurturing Peace: Building blocks for a more resilient people - A case of Rwanda
DESCRIPTION:Register for this event. \nNurturing Peace: Building blocks for a more resilient people – A case of Rwanda \n  \n\nIn a country that suffered from war and genocide perpetrated against Tutsi in 1994\, in a country where the social fabric seems so broken that no one sees signs of light\, a country that inherited so many challenges and each of them seemed to be a priority. Everything was a priority. No State machinery\, 3.5 million refugees\, orphans and child headed households\, wounded people\, widows\, no shelter\, trauma\, justice\, coexistence\, Genocide ideology\, children born out of rape\, HIV\, broken trust etc. Social reconstruction became a dream that many aspired to but seemed unattainable. \nIt is generally known that teachers have the capacity to build and heal a whole generation. They influence not only their students but also the community at large. They however need content and appropriate methodology. It is against this backdrop that Aegis worked with the Ministry of Education and specifically Rwanda Basic Education Board\, where the biggest achievement was to have Peace and Values Education integrated in the school curriculum. Aegis works with parents\, youth and Decision Makers & Researchers to support conducive and peaceful environment. \nAegis Peace and Values Education initiatives which are essentially transformative\, intend to cultivate the knowledge base\, skills\, attitudes and values that seek to transform people’s behaviors for better and informed decisions. They are built around the concept of Ubumuntu (Ubuntu) and a mindset that is able to challenge personal and social action to create conditions and systems that portray nonviolence\, justice and other peace values. \nThrough this discussion\, we will look at how Peace and values Education is supporting the journey to Peace starting with inner peace\, social reconstruction and contribute to never again; in Rwanda and beyond. \n\n\n
