Hélène Joffe was born in Marseille, France. She was still a child when the Germans invaded and went into hiding in different villages in France. After the War, she returned to Marseilles and came to South Africa in 1954. She is widowed, with a large family consisting of three daughters, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
