Further, we demonstrate how the Nazis used laws to underpin their racist ideologies, observing how the propaganda machine and the legal system worked hand in hand to reinforce each other. We look at how people responded and why they responded as they did.
Unit 4 synopsis
In this unit, we study antisemitism, its roots and how it has developed. We will observe how Jewish people were viewed in the Christian world and look at how and why they were stereotyped and scapegoated. We will analyse how anti-Jewish sentiment changes with events in society, specifically observing how the idea of race affects how Jewish people are viewed.
Unit 5 synopsis
In this unit, we look at how the Nazis treated people other than the Jews that they considered inferior and the ways in which they tried to rid their society of those they considered inferior. The Nazis saw a difference between “blood” enemies and “enemies of the state”, we unpack how the Nazis differentiated between different enemies and why, looking at the impact of Nazi ideology on ordinary people and different communities.
Unit 6 synopsis
In this unit, we look at who the Allies and Axis countries were. What the political ambitions of the Nazis were, and why they wanted war. Once they invade Poland we examine why and how the Nazis used the ghettos focusing on isolation, separation and humiliation and their consequences. We study the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, analysing why it took place when it did and look at sources showing different perspectives.
Unit 7 synopsis
In this unit, we look at the decision to kill all the Jewish people in Europe by first using mobile killing units and then building killing centre. We unpack the difference between labour and death camps, and how the Nazis used both. We end the unit discussing The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, why it was necessary and which countries did not sign.
Unit 8 synopsis
In this unit, we ask the question “why study the history of the Holocaust in South Africa?” We look at the differences and similarities between the policies of the Nazis and the Apartheid regime keeping in mind that both histories occur at different times and in different circumstances and being careful not to conflate the two histories. We unpack the term “conflate” and how conflation of histories leads to inaccurate understanding. We ask the reasons for studying different histories unpacking how this broadens our understanding of our own histories and allows us to analyse situations and understand them from a different perspective.
