Voices from The Auschwitz Album: Marking the 80th Anniversary of the Deportations of Jews from Hungary
From May to July 1944, the Nazis deported over 420,000 Jews from Hungary to the death camp of Auschwitz II Birkenau. Most we murdered shortly after arrival.
Join us as we hear two stories of survival, as well as how this history is incorporated into the core exhibition at the Cape Town Holocaust & Genocide Centre.
Hungarian Holocaust survivor Rachel Herczl, who at 15 years old was deported to Auschwitz, and whose life was saved on the ‘selection’ platform by a Polish-Jewish prisoner. Rachel will be joined by her daughter Tova Herzl.
Holocaust Museum LA docent Mitch Kreitenberg, who discovered photographs of his father’s family in the Auschwitz Album. The album depicts the Hungarian deportations and is the only known visual evidence of the ‘selection’ process towards mass murder at Auschwitz II Birkenau.
