My painting is of the island of Rhodes during 2 very different points in time. The dark blue quink on the right represents Rhodes during the time of the Holocaust. The dark blue monochromatic ship, on the right, references the ship that the Jews sailed on, on their way to the concentration camp. It symbolises the horrors of the Holocaust and the atrocities that the Jewish people had to face. The ship is painted to appear as if it is sailing into the colourful harbour on the left. This colourful image depicts modern day Rhodes, a beautiful and vibrant city. The 2 mediums blur together to form one image of Rhodes. This symbolises that although Rhodes is a magnificent city, it is also a city where many Jewish lives were ended. We must never forget.
