Amelia Algrante was born in Rhodes Island in 1925. She was deported to Auschwitz and then sent to Dachau where she was liberated, and sent to a Soviet camp. She spent time in Vienna and Rome before emigrating to the Congo. She came to South Africa with her husband in 1960. She is sorely missed by her many friends in the Cape Town Jewish community.
