Mercada Alhadeff was born in Rhodes Island and deported to Auschwitz. She was liberated at Theresienstadt in May 1945. After liberation, she spent time in Italy, before emigrating to the Congo in 1947. She settled in South Africa with her husband in 1974. Mercada is sorely missed by her many friends in the Cape Town Jewish community.
