Xavier Piatka was born in Vilna, then part of Poland, in 1919. He was deported from the Vilna ghetto to various slave labour camps in Poland and Estonia. He was liberated at Lauenberg while on a death march to Germany. He came to Cape Town with his wife, renowned Yiddish actress, Chayele Rosenthal, in 1951. When Xavier passed away in 1998, he left behind two beloved daughters and three grandchildren.
